Description:
When the folk/pop/satirical singer and songwriter, Sandy Andina gets together with the friendly, neighborhood, yodeling cowboy, Stephen Lee Rich the result is a perfect blend of the contemporary and the traditional. Their new CD, Because We Can certainly reflects that.
Between the title track (written by Sandy about her run-ins with huge bureaucracies) and “Time Has No Mercy” (Stephen Lee’s bit of Americana about our war with Mexico in the 19th century) you get an idea of their musical diversity. Top it off with the Andina and Rich version of the old standard “A Fine Romance” and their co-authored, gospel-influenced tune “You Can’t Do It All On Your Own” and you can get areal sense of the range of their abilities. On stage they add hilarious stories, wild patter, Sandy’s mountain dulcimer, and Stephen Lee’s yodel. You get a show with something wonderful for every family member.

(Acoustic - Pop - Rock)
“If your heart’s not in it people can tell.” 20-year-old Brian Pounds says about writing. “So I try not to get too caught up by the outside forces when it comes to music. I strive to guide the lyrics and chords rather than totally allowing the force of music to control what I do.”
Perhaps that explains why the songs on Brian’s debut album, After You’re Gone, vibrate with the force of love restrained and then skillfully released. The record embodies late-night cool, with simmering pop, rock, and jazz melodies becoming instantly familiar as the artist takes you into his confidence. “I went for honesty with this album. The first time I ever played one of my songs for strangers it felt like I was telling my deepest, darkest secret. The fact that they related to it was the best feeling yet to date...”

Description:
To celebrate the opening of the new fire station on the airport grounds, the Hays Regional Airport will host a “Great Planes on the Great Plains” Fly-In July 17 for pilots, aviation enthusiasts and the general public at large.
Private, military and antique planes will be on display. A static display of remote control airplanes and helicopters will also be part of the fun.
Events begin at 7 am with a breakfast for Fly-In pilots (free will offering accepted) and an opportunity to meet the pilots. Additional activities are scheduled throughout the day, including fire extinguisher training, children’s games, a golf ball drop, a free hamburger/hot dog feed (free will offering accepted), and tours of the new fire station and Mobile Fire Safety House. Ident-a-Kid fingerprinting will be offered through the Hays Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol will demonstrate its Seat Belt Convincer.
Prizes will be awarded in all games and prize drawings will be held throughout the day for numerous items donated by local sponsors. Great Lakes Airlines is a major sponsor for a drawing for two round-trip tickets for two to Denver.
“Our Fly-In coincides with the Downtown Hays’ Blues & Barbecue and the Sternberg Museum’s Super-Croc exhibit, so there will be lots to see and do July 17 in Hays,” Public Works Director Brenda Herrman said.
Herrman emphasized all events at the Fly-In are free and open to the public. “This is a great opportunity for family fun,” she said. “We’ll have something for everyone and finish up around 2 pm so there’s time to participate in all the other activities going on in the community that day as well.”
A volunteer committee comprised of nearly a dozen representatives from the Hays business, health and education sectors have assisted in organizing the event. “We owe this group a deep debt of gratitude,” Herrman said. “They’ve gone out and solicited prizes, helped plan the events, and are serving as on-site coordinators that day. We couldn’t be doing an event of this scale without them.”
Herrman said organizers hope the event will become an annual activity for the community. “We intend to build on this year’s success,” she said.

Craig Ramsey is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer based in Cleveland,
Ohio. As one half of the indie-pop duo Bears, Craig has toured the country behind two
critically acclaimed albums, sharing stages with like-minded groups such as Camera
Obscura, Tilly And The Wall, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. On his stunning solo
debut, Parting Gift for a Party Girl, he crafts hopeful odes and bittersweet goodbyes
chronicling the late autumn of an ill-starred relationship. Fans of chamber-pop classics by
George Harrison, The Zombies, and The Beach Boys will immediately recognize the colors
on Craig’s palette. But while the instrumentation suggests sweetness and light, there’s a
shadow running across the face of the album’s sunny-seeming pop. It’s this contrast that
initially grabs your ears and ultimately catches your heart. Resigned melodies fight the uplift
of lush arrangements, cooing harmonies wrap themselves around biting lyrics,
recriminations leave their mark in major keys, the door slams—gently. The effect gives the
self-produced album a rare immediacy and maximum intimacy that may well prove as
timeless as its musical influences, if not its inspiration.

Ken Miller, biologist from Brown University
"God, Darwin, and Global Warming: Does Science Really Matter in America Today?"
Ken, who recently appeared on "The Colbert Report," is the author of “Finding Darwin’s God” and “Only A Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America’s Soul,” and was a principal witness in the Kitzmiller v. Dover case which found that teaching intelligent design as science in public schools is unconstitutional. It’s looking like the title of his talk will be “God, Darwin, and Global Warming. Does Science Really Matter in America Today?” Ken is also a devout Roman Catholic, so his message will resonate with many in Ellis County.
