Location:
Ellis, KS
Description:
Get Your Motor Runnin', Head out on the Highway, Lookin' for adventure---in Ellis, Kansas!! That's right, the 2010 version of Riverfest is rollin' into town on June 12, 2010! Get Your Motor Runnin' is our theme this year and I can't wait to get to June.
Riverfest is our annual cut loose, good time before the dog days ...of summer begin to take hold of our little part of the world. Join us on June 12, 2010 where vendors from all over converge on Ellis to temp your tummies with all kinds of food from Buffalo Burgers to German Sausage and Kraut. Other vendors display and sell their goods and crafts or serve up the best hand-made, genuine lemon-aid! Don't fret, you'll be able to find something to whet your whistle so you can sing along with the good old songs!!
You won't want to miss this year's parade. If it gets your motor runnin', we want to see it in the parade. Whether it's the old Johnny Popper Tractor, the Hot Mustangs from the 50's or the good old '57 Chevy, we want to see it! Dust off the old Hoopie, hang the fuzzy dice from the rear-view and come to Ellis to show her off. With the addition of the car show this year, there should be enough chrome to blind a person!
The evening entertainment will be provided by Flat Spin, a great band from Hays, KS. They play the good older Rock & Roll. There will be something for everyone this year. You say you like a good golf challenge? Have we got a challenge for you. How about a "Hole in 1 across the Creek"? More details will follow as they get ironed out.
Call the Chamber office at 785-726-2660 for info on how to get in the car show, become a vendor or just for the who-its and whats-it questions. We got the answers! You can also find sign-up forms on our webpage for the car show and vendor reservations. See you all at the Chrysler Parks!

Student Achievement in Tough Economic Times: How Will the State’s Tight Budget Affect Your Schools and Your Community?
A KASB co-sponsored community education event
What
An accurate, concise overview of key educational issues, and their potential impact on your community’s ability to educate students that will be useful when discussing issues with candidates this election season.
Who
School, business and community leaders; parents and grandparents; educators; and candidates for public office at all levels.
Why
Public schools face increasing demands to raise student performance. Following increased funding after the Supreme Court’s Montoy decision, school districts are now dealing with reduced state aid. Kansas voters need to have a firm grasp of the state’s fiscal situation as well as the resources available to schools if they are to follow and accurately interpret the headlines and news releases that are generated regularly. Information coming from those that support program cuts often paints a very different picture than information put forth by those who think increased revenues are absolutely necessary. Upon close inspection, it is not the numbers in question, it is what the numbers really mean for students, schools and the state’s economy. Which side is more fairly and accurately telling the story?
The Program
The 60-minute program will review the Kansas constitutional charge for public education; how public education’s mission has changed; how those changes have affected costs and funding; the connection between funding and student achievement; and how today’s educational investment affects the state’s future economic prosperity and values. There will be a question-and-answer period following the presentation.
Kansans are more aware than ever when considering what services they value and the level of revenue it takes to provide these services. These events will help communities better communicate with those who hope to represent those communities and their needs.
About KASB
The Kansas Association of School Boards is a not-for-profit organization which serves as the common voice for Kansas boards of education. KASB members are governing boards for unified school districts, community colleges, area vocational-technical schools and cooperatives, interlocals and regional service centers. KASB is governed by a Board of Directors composed of school board members from throughout Kansas and is guided by a comprehensive set of policies and resolutions that are approved by a majority of KASB members.

All day event
Location:
Sternberg Museum of Natural History
Description:
As Chief Martin Brody so wearily says in the movie Jaws, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!” Well, maybe not today, but 85 million years ago you certainly would have! The Western Interior Sea that covered Kansas and most of the Midwest during the Late Cretaceous was filled with sea creatures that would have haunted the dreams of the most wayward fisherman, including the “Jaws-sized” Ginsu shark. Fortunately for us, although these creatures are no longer living, they might still be found lurking beneath the prairie sod and chalk in western Kansas.
Go on expedition to the fossil-rich Niobrara Chalk of western Kansas with Mike Everhart (Adjunct Curator of Paleontology) and Reese Barrick (Sternberg Director) to discover the allure that coaxed the Sternberg Family to devote their lives and careers to the prehistoric life of this seemingly desolate territory known as the High Plains!
In addition to learning about the Sternberg Family and fossils of the Niobrara Chalk, you will receive guided tours of three museums (Fick Fossil and History Museum, Fort Wallace Museum, and Keystone Gallery) as well as visit picturesque Monument and Castle Rock.
We will depart from Sternberg Museum at 8:15 a.m. and return by the end of the day.
What to bring?
Sack lunch, snacks, plenty of water, comfortable shoes (no open-toed shoes), sunscreen, hat/cap, and bandanna
Fee – Museum Members – $25 adults, $15 youth (10 and under); non-members – $40 adult, $30 youth
Registration is required (deadline June 21) and space is limited – contact Brian at 785-628-5502, brian.c.bartels@gmail.com to register or for more information.
