Description:
Do you enjoy watching nature programs on The Discovery Channel or Animal Planet? Ever wonder what it takes to do something like that? It requires an understanding of the natural world. Why not start with what surrounds you? Sternberg’s Wildlife Explorer’s Camp is a 4-day camp (Aug. 10-13) that will teach students about the plants and animals that make their home in Kansas. In addition to learning how to identify plants and animals, participants will get to:
• Make a plant/leaf collection
• Make an insect collection
• Learn the collecting techniques for plants, insects, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and aquatic invertebrates.
Participants also will take short field trips to surrounding habitats in Ellis County and practice their identification and collecting techniques. On hand to instruct the lessons and lead the trips are Fort Hays State University biology professors, Kansas Wildlife and Park biologists, and Sternberg Museum curators. This camp is designed to not only get kids interested in wildlife and the outdoors, but also introduce them to amazing organisms that live right in our own “backyard!” More details will be distributed to those interested in registering their kids. For kides entering grades 3-5.
Fee: Museum Members – $60, Non-Members - $85
Maximum number of participants for each camp is 20.

Paradise Fears is a six-piece pop rock group from Vermillion, South Dakota. After recording their debut EP, “The Secret to Dropping Out,” these high school seniors quickly tore through the Midwest in 2009, turning heads and stopping hearts all along the way. 2010 will feature the release of their second EP, “Make Them Believe,” produced by Jordan Schmidt (Motion City Soundtrack, All Time Low). Soon to be known for an energetic l...ive show (think N’Sync meets a UFC Cage Match), this pop punk ensemble is often compared to the likes of Taking Back Sunday and Mayday Parade. Born in the heartland and bred in front of a microphone, the future holds promise for the PF boys.

Doug and Tracey Palen own and operate Palen Family Farms located east of Tipton in North Central Kansas. Doug is a mountain bike enthusiast and has established 13 miles of trails winding through the creeks, pastures, native grass, and croplands on the farm. Each August, the Palens host the annual Cruise the Blues mountain bike festival.
Cruise the Blues is an event in which riders of any age or ability can participate. The day starts at noon with a 6-hour ride and race. All riders start at noon and can continue to ride laps until 6pm. Participants complete as many or as few laps as they like. You simply check in at the end of each completed lap.
The day will continue with concessions and raffle drawings for cool stuff donated by our generous sponsors. The day's festivities conclude with an awards ceremony including trophies and cash prizes and top everything off with barn-burnin' live music.
Cruise the Blues also includes the Cruiz'n Kids race for the younger riders, starting at 10am. Come join them for a day the entire family can enjoy!
